FAQ
-
How does it work? Each week you get access to a pre-recorded video on one or more aspects of scriptwriting. That same week, a few days later we all get together live and online and discuss that video lesson and you can ask your questions about your own script or ask for advice. At the end of 8 weeks, you should have finsihed your short film script and I will critique your script and provide you with notes and advice.
-
What aspects of scriptwriting are covered?Well, to be cheeky - all aspects of scriptwriting are thoroughly covered and most aspects of the filmmaking process. Your head may explode with all the knowledge I’m going to input into your brain!
-
How long is the course? The course is officlially 8 weeks in length. I will give you an extra month grace perieod to finish your script for critiquing.
-
What does a typical lesson entail? Each lesson is pre-recorded and focus’ on an aspect of scriptwritng. Week 6 for example is all about dialogue. I will walk you through dialogue with lots of examples and discuss good and bad dialogue, pitfalls and mistakes most writers make and writing so your dialogue sounds natural and believable. The lessons are chauk a block full of information and can be intense so you might want to watch them a few times to really absorb it all.
-
How long is each video lesson? The average video time is one hour. Some go over and a few are a little shorter.
-
How long are the interactive sessions?Out of respect for everyone’s valuable time, they are scheduled for one hour. If we are having a particularily good discussion, we may go a bit overtime if everyone can and is agreed.
-
What day of the week and time will the interactive live sessions be scheduled? This will be determined for each 8 week session. The video lessons will drop on the first sunday of each week. The follow-up live interactive video sessions depend on participants time zones and availability but will happen 3 or 4 days latter. I’ll try and find a convenient time and day that works for everyone. And if per chance you can’t make the live interactive sessions for any reason, I’ll record and make them available to everyone in the course to be viewed at your leisure.
-
How much writing time should I commit to each day?hat of course is up to you and depends on your skill level and abilities. From the get go though I will say - don’t worry about working your ass off and spending every waking moment working on your script. Like I said in the intro video, you should be able to take some time away from your writing and clear you head, go for a walk or a hike and chill out. Some people write in concentrated multi-hour sessions and others do well working 30 minutes to an hour each day. Find what works for you and write when the urge takes you. Writing when you aren’t into it is counter productive. I will discuss this further in one of the weekly lessons.
-
What about the homework?I realize you are busy. I have tried to make homework as interesting and easy as possible. There is a little bit but it’s all geared toward you and your script. I may ask you to watch a relevant movie or tv episode from time to time but that’s just plain fun!
-
Can I access all 8 videos in week one?No you keener, you can’t! The course was designed so you watch one lesson and digest all the info.(and there is a shitload!) You then follow-up each lesson with the interactive video session with any questions you have pertaining to the video lesson. Watching all 8 at once would be chaos and your brains would be splattered all over your computer, your desk and anyone standing within 10 meters of you, from too much input. Really it’s for your own safety!

How do the live interactive sessions work? They work great! ha ha Seriously, they will all be different and very organic and loose in structure, just like jazz music. It’s been my experience that a group discussion with your fellow students will take on a mind of it’s own. One questioin or comment will lead to another and so on. So, in a sense, the questions you bring to the session will influence it’s content and direction. And I will be there to guide the ship and get us back on course if needed. The interactive live session is a good time to ask for help and guidance concerning your own script. My style is laidback, respectful and fun and that’s how the live seesions will flow too.
-
Do you give feedback during the course?Yes. The live interactive sessions are a great place to ask for feedback. Not only from me but from your fellow students as well. Chances are that questions you have about writing your script will resonate with your fellow students and spark further questions that perhaps you hadn’t thought of and that will help your writing. I, of course, can and will give feedback in the interactive sessions. If you are really stuck and need to email me a short question - I’m good with that as long as I don’t get inundated on a daily basis.
-
I don’t feel comfortable sharing my work with others, do I have to participate? Not a problem. Participation in the live ssssions and/or contributing in them is not mandatory. You can come to the live sessions and not be seen, video wise, and/ or you can even come and mute your mic as well. Just let me know beforehand and all is well.
